<http://www.w3.org/TR/html4/sgml/entities.html> doesn't say anything 
about where
character entities do or don't apply.  I assume they're valid throughout HTML,
both inside and outside tags.

When I set those alt texts to '  ' or '   ' instead of two or three 
non-breaking
spaces, the spaces don't get rendered at all.  With &nbsp;, Mozilla 
renders the
spacing as desired.
