I've committed this change to HEAD as it tested okay locally for me.  
I'm not sure I can subjectively tell the difference on my main  
install, but on a laptop install that used to be pretty pokey things  
definitely feel zippier.

Please, anyone with a HEAD checkout, test this and let us know how it  
does and if you find any problems with it. If it checks out we'll get  
it into a stable release sooner rather than later.
