[dev] Install script ideas

Has this idea been abandoned?

I posted a message about my ideas for this on the user list, perhaps it 
should have been here.

If this is no longer under development I would be interested in taking 
over, using the advice suggested here and a bit more. My idea is a bit 
more far reaching than that discussed here but I think it can be useful.
