A couple of weeks after the initial post, the initial author granted me
permission to release it under the LGPL, but under three conditions:

* The VFS::SMB module must be able to work on its own;
* All functionalities of the original phpsmb GPL module must be kept;
* The code must be approved by the initial author.

As I moved on to other projects I didn't take the time to comply to
these - my initial need was fulfilled then.  I think I might have time
to finish this in a couple of weeks, but as postponing is one of my bad
habits, contributions are welcome.
