imp redirect.php

Could someone explain to me how the redirect.php script fits
into the general imp page structure? I believe I understood that
it redirects you between composition & login pages, taken into
account session variables. Specifically from which pages do you
link to this redirect script and when do you link directly to
other pages?

Thanks,
