guidance needed

On a Mandrake 8.0 box, I'm trying to setup horde/imp with php.  I've
been looking at the horde/imp devel tree and it purports to be able to
do what I want.  It requires php 4.0.5 for the PEAR include.  I've been
attempting to compile 4.0.5 with mod_php, but I can't get it to generate
shared libs, it always generates static.  I am working with the 4.0.5
tarball available from php.net.

Is anybody using this successfully, or would you advise me to try the
CVS version.

Yes, yes, I know there's not a whole lot of info in this email, but I'm
looking to see if people are obtaining better results from the CVS
version of php 4.0.5 or the tarball 4.0.5 (I'm not knowledgeable how
much development exists between the two).  Suggestions appreciated.
