[horde] still having 404 prob...

index.php in the horde dir is giving a 404.
if I comment out:
define('HORDE_BASE', dirname(__FILE__));

I get a nice php error:
Undefined class name 'horde' in /home/gridhost/www/webmail/horde/index.php on 
line 26

which makes sense - but at least it doesn't return a 404


Anybody have any suggestions at all? I'm not even sure what questions to ask or 
details to include on this one. The test.php script runs perfectly.
