Because your dn actually begins with cn and you try to bind with uid.

Either change *all* your dns to uid instead of cn, or alter the code as
I advised.

I promise you it works with CVS Turba and Openldap 2.1.10. I *use* it
myself, even for user administration (changing addresses, email
addresses, user passwords etc).
