Have you seen Troll?  It's the Horde team's NNTP client..

There hasn't been a full release yet, but a snapshot is available via 
FTP and it can be checked out of the CVS repository.

Now, what I'd like to see is a phpbb style forum..  how functional is 
Agora at this point?
