Just to update (and kill) this thread, I received a response to my post in the
php accelerator forum asking where I could find version 1.3.4. The answer was:

"1.3.4 was pulled because of problems. 1.3.3r2 is the version you're supposed to
use for now. :-)

If you still get "memory exhausted" errors, set a MaxRequestsPerChild if it's
currently 0, or a lower one (as low as 100) if it's not 0."

I found another post that suggested adding:

phpa.enable_php_memory_bug_workaround = 1

to my php.ini file. This seems to be working (so far) for me. Just in case
anybody else is having the same problem.
