As i said in my previous post, is_a() wasn't available until version 
4.2.0.  It
is asking an awful lot of your software to handle functions that it doesn't
even know exists.

Thus, I gave two options:
1) upgrade PHP to 4.2.0+
2) use a version of PEAR that doesn't use the is_a() function
