[horde] gettext / php

hi,

i'm looking at a brand-new Horde installation ... trying to pull up 
http://myserver/horde/test.php ... and seeing the following error message:

Fatal error: Call to undefined function: session_start() in 
/srv/www/htdocs/horde/test.php on line 14

to my nose, this smells like a php installation compiled without gettext 
... but a phpinfo page clearly shows gettext support as enabled:

gettext
GetText Support 	enabled

Apache 2.0.50, php 4.3.8, horde-3.0.3, Suse 9.2
