Oh oh. I don't like to hear that at all :)
There's no way I (or my users) could go back to pop after using IMAP. I am
using imap-uw for an IMAP server, but would be willing to switch another one
if there something more reliable/less troublesome. Rumour has it that many
people are running imap-uw with no problems... Any recommendations?

Don't use imap. It's an old unsolved problem with imap on some systems I
guess. The apache child process will crash anyhow, see the archives. I was
hoping the problem would be solved soon, but after a couple of months I gave
up and I'm using (unfortunately) POP3 in imp.
Running OpenBSD 3.6 with default apache installation in chroot.
