Well, I took Shawn Rizzoli's advice and did a pear upgrade-all. Since I did that
(and it did upgrade Http-request) I have not seen this problem recur! Hopefully
this has improved the situation, and also I conceptually like this - if it
works, it means there is not a problem with Horde itself, but with the
supporting software.

Of course, by sending this email, I am no doubt jinxing the fix..
