[horde] webmail speed

When I read mail on a webserver using i.e. squirrelmail things are a lot faster (screen updates, switching mailboxes, etc) than using my local horde installation. They both use php4, so I wonder: how can this be? Should I use some kind op (speed) option in horde that I overlooked?
