Yes! Thanks so much for taking the time to help me thought the maze, much 
appreciated. That installed and sorted that problem Doing :
pear install -o Log Mail Mail_Mime DB Date File
now gives :
Could not open input file: /usr/share/pear/pearcmd.php.

php-pear-4.3.2-3mdk.noarch.rpm is installed. Some googling has not told me 
about pearcmd,
which pear gives /usr/bin/pear, but that's a binary not a directory. Do you 
know what I am missing?
