I just installed eAccelerator a few days ago. It runs Horde without any 
problems, and some limited testing indicates that it sped up the server 
by 4.5 times. I'd recommend trying that if APC isn't working. I'm still 
running PHP 4.3.9; running such a new version as 5.1.1 may also be the 
problem.
