[horde] PHP Fatal error: Call to a member function on a non-object

I'm a newbie to Horde.

running into a bit of trouble here. 

I just installed horde-3.0.9 (from /usr/ports on FreeBSD) and having some
difficulties getting it running. I am following the configuring directions
from the Horde website and currently at step 5 - completing installation.  I
find that there is not any authentication choice when logged in as the
administrator and clicking 'setup'.

Everything is passing the php.test window now.  But at the Horde setup window
I find that Horde is reporting an error with the configuration:  "No version
found in original configuration. Regenerate configuration."  I click the
configuration icon and nothing happens.  I look in my apache logs for errors
and I find a "PHP Fatal error:  Call to a member function on a non-object"
error.  more details below.  What is the best step to take here?  I am a
little lost.
