Probably because RC* versions aren't necessarily considered for public
consumption. It's great if you use it and report problems that you may
encounter, but it's your choice to use or not to use these "releases".

Imagine the problems having to maintain patches from RC1, RC2, RC3,
beta4, gamma9, and so on.. ?

Simply download the release, unpack it and copy the files from the
unpacked directory into your installed directory. Unless you've made
modifications to application files, and/or templates, copying the
release files over the other files will not destroy anything.
