Do those users have Options -> Mail -> Mailbox and Folder Display Options 
-> Default sorting criteria set to "Arrival Time"?  This should be the 
lowest impact on the IMAP server.  Anything that causes IMP to retrieve 
message headers or bodies will cause the problems you describe as 
mailboxes grow large.
