CentOS 5.3 has php 5.1.6 packaged. If you absolutely need php 5.2.*
you can get 5.2.6 from the CentOS test repository with gd and gettext
support included, and thus still be able to manage php using yum.
Unless you know what you are doing in moving outside rpms for
something like php you are inviting a whole world of pain... I'm
running Horde using CentOS 5.3 and php 5.2.6 from the testing repo
with no problems, although I had to do some fiddly stuff to get
php-mcrypt and a couple of others.
