As i did testing horde4 too "beside" an existing horde3 i copied the existing / used horde3 database into a new one configured within horde4. You should NOT use the same DB for both nor downgrade an upgraded DB later.
Then i did running update database shemes within Administration which seems to work very well so far. The only thing i got faced was that a few apps (i.e. kronolith) gaves out an upgrade error first time i run upgrade database shemes, but after calling that again i got OKs there as well.
I was able to take over some old config settings, but you have to re-open at least any config in Administration once and save it again to make shure they are/get compatible to Horde4.
On productive systems it should be a good idea to completely review all configs as the new configuration file naming sheme allows you future upgrades much more easily.
hth
good luck,
Niels.
