Ok, so from scratch:

H5
User-Authentication through IMP to IMAP
Group-Backend SQL.

The Username is stored correctly in the sql table horde_groups_members 
but displayed without the underline in groups ui.

Functionality seems to be ok, at least for what I use groups for.
