[horde] Different user names and passwords for Horde and IMAP

I'm installing Horde in a company that uses an external IMAP server.
The users use a different login and password to login to Horde than
they use to login to the external IMAP server. The IMAP passwords are
unknown to the individual users (not sure why, but that's how it's
configured).
Is it possible to map the local users' usernames and passswords to the
usernames and passwords used by the IMAP server so that the user won't
have to login to IMP (which is impossible since they don't know their
IMAP passwords) after logging in to Horde?
Assuming it's indeed possible, how do I ensure that the mapping
doesn't break when Horde is upgraded?
Thanks!
