I also missed som 'official' documentation about the required webserver config.
For that reason there are many "How I solved this" Links on the web.
But there is no real technical discription how the rewriting works,
why it is needed and why the problem was solved using an .htaccess.

It looks like there are other solutions which may be much more performant
but have other disadvantages. A good documentation would help any kind of users
to decide which config they will use.

so +1 for more documentation ...
