For everyone considering using self-signed certificates: SSL  
certificates that are trusted by virtually all browsers can be bought  
for less than US$ 5/year. Using those will relieve one of the burden  
of having to trust the CA root that is used for the self signed  
certificate on every system that connects. Unless you also want your  
clients to authenticate to the server by means of a certificate, using  
self-signed certificates usually isn't worth the trouble.
