Okay, still getting weirder... I created a text file containing certain distinguishable string, added the file as attachment and greped for the string- on the server where attachments are working the file can be found under /tmp/.horde/imp/compose/ but it simply doesn't exist on the server where attaching does not work. /tmp is writable by the webserver. I set [compose][use_vfs] in imp's config to true and tried again but the file simply doesn't show up on the server. I analysed the http traffic and can see the attachment go over the line to the webserver where it seems to vanish.
