It's not a server failure. It's a cicso security device 'protecting'  
the server.

'Protection' is done by masking the initial 220 line. Nearly anything  
is replaced by '*'
An SMTP Client can't find the string 'ESMTP' and has to fall back to RFC821.
For Cisco that is 'secure' ...
