No, the image/gallery data is stored in the database. The image file,  
itself, is obtained from the VFS.

How many images does the UI indicate? Is the pager shown? What "mode"  
is the gallery in (date, "noramal, etc...)? Try adding a new image and  
watch the logs for errors.
