slowly rewinding what happened after which step, I recalled that the  
problems begun after I tried to change the database password using  
phpMyAdmin 4.5.2. (actually, similar problem arouse with phpmyadmin's  
own database).

After some woodoo I restored the ability to connect to the database,  
but, alas...
