Jan I think there is a bit of a misunderstanding here. I agree with you on
the following:

If I click on a checkbox and then afterwards on a subject line, that horde
imp selects only the mail I wanted to select.

The other way round, when I click on a subject line and then on a radio
checkbox, both mails are checked because the previous selection is kept. I
also agree with the fact that it has been that way for years, so no big deal
if you know that fact.

To all: for me this is not a bug, you must simply understand how checkboxes
work! But from a IT support perspective I do fully understand what you are
saying, because many users don't actually look at what happens on their
screen when they click on something. Also true for many years ;-)

What do we learn from this? Stop fixing the user, because in the end you
can't. ;-)

Why not make it a selectable feature, so that the user can choose a
behaviour mode? One for "pros" who know how checkboxes work (the default)
and another mode for the "careless" who need an extra net to keep them from
falling.
Make a feature request, not a bug report since it cleary isn't a bug!
