Sorry for the late reply the emails got in my spam box for some  
reasons...  The problem was caused by me idiotly reusing configuration  
settings in backends.php from  
https://docs.bitnami.com/bch/apps/horde/configuration/configure-smtp/  
which obviously were not (are not) compatible with my version(s) of  
Horde Groupware.

Now imp/config/backends.local.php looks like:

$servers['imap'] = array(
    'disabled' => false,
    'name' => 'GMail IMAP server',
    'hostspec' => 'imap.gmail.com',
    'hordeauth' => true,
    'protocol' => 'imap',
    'port' => 993,
    'secure' => 'ssl'
);

and everything is working perfectly.  Horde is using GMail to send emails.
