A little bit of progress. From what I've been able to determine, last 
Friday (14 Nov 2025) there were 2 Gmail app updates on Android:

One or both of them appear to be the culprit. On one of the phones I've 
uninstalled all Gmail updates (as there is no option to only uninstall 
the latest one) - and the sync is magically back to working fine. Even 
better then fine - the base Gmail app version on this phone from about 
2021 is really nice and fast. When I will get a bit of time, I should 
try side loading the latest Gmail app version from before last Friday 
from apkmirror.com - to both check it works fine, and to provide a bit 
better level of security then a version from 2021. But after using up 
most of today on this, I've run out of time for now.
