[i18n] translation.php and fatal error handling

Translation.php has a very annoying feature. If there is a fatal error 
within the po or the pot files then the existing po file is destroyed 
along with all your translated strings.

Though the damage might not be so great if you use compendium, but without 
compendium translation.pgp will create an empty po file.

Would it be possible that the translation.php makes a backup of the 
existing po file and if there are any fatal errors it reports the errors 
but also restores the backupped file.
