deleted items keep showing up

Here is an issue I am having.  If I delete items, but not expunge them, then 
the next time I get a new message, read it, delete it, imp brings up the next 
message.  But, the next message is one that I already deleted.  Is there 
anything I can change or set that would make imp not re-read deleted items?  I 
hope this makes sense?

I am using imp 2.2.3.
