The pop/imap server is Messaging Direct's commercial knock-off of the Cyrus 
server, probably from about the Cyrus 1.5.x days. (NOT my idea -
management's decision).  It's running on a Sun Ultra 450/Solaris 2.6.
Upgrading this server is not a simple job.  It's not open source and
the company has changed the code some from what Cyrus distributed. 
In any case I suspect the mail server is not where the difficulty lies.
Ah, well, I'll keep investigating.
