Yes.

Possibly. Mysql is fairly fast to initialize connections (as opposed to, say,
Oracle), and if the database is on the same box, you might not see much gain
from persistant connections. If the db is on another box, the difference might
be noticeable.

Here you're on your own - not sure what kind of effects that might have,
although it screams "concurrency problems!" to me without really looking at
it...
