There is an Apache module called mod_backhand (http://www.backhand.org/) 
that we use with a modified version of IMP.  Basically, the module allows 
the servers to talk to each other and determine which has the most 
available resources (this is determined by an algorithm) and then sends the 
client's request to that server.  There is an FAQ and a white paper on the 
web site with more information.
