You want HEAD for 2.3.x -- STABLE_*_2 is 2.2.x and STABLE is 2.0.x

No, some things have changed (though mostly for the better) so it won't be
exactly the same.

For the most part, you just need to get PHP 4 installed (including recent
PEAR), and get PHP's session handling working (horde/test.php is your
friend), and then you need to edit the configuration files found in the
various "config" directories using a text editor. PHPLIB is gone now, so
that has simplified the installation process.

Thank you for your speedy reply.

I still have one more question, however:

I just now got the HEAD versions of Horde and IMP from the CVS tree,
but the INSTALL file within imp/docs still contains the same caveat as
I quoted above. Should I ignore this caveat and assume that the
subsequent instructions within this INSTALL file are indeed up to
date?

Thanks again.
