newmail_popup not working

status.php3 is not reloading

When I right click on the status.php3 and manually reload status.php3 via
right click and left click 'refresh' then, the page reloads but no
newmail_popup.

If the only code that governs this is in, defaults.php3 -and- status.php3
then something is truely a-miss.  I would like to send someone my
status.php3 to so that they can diff it against a known working status.php3.
(provided they are also using imp-2.2.4)
