IMP and Sendmail::Milter

Hi,
I'm using the Sendmail milter API with Sendmail::Milter to filter emails 
at sendmail level.

To the filters to work, a SMTP conection to sendmail should be made.

I have in the newsgroups that php->mail() function does not use SMTP to 
send emails.
Is this true?
If yes, how can I make IMP the send emails using SMTP instead of just 
calling sendmail?
