I have been able to reproduce it each time I try.  The following is a
step-by-step explanation:

1. Write a reply to an email
2. Click "Check Spelling" in the composition window
3. Accept the first three spelling suggestions, click "next"
4. Click "done" to exit back to the composition window
5. The reply text is gone
