We regularly hear of installations with users in the hundreds of
thousands, so it's certainly doable.  You may want to check out the Horde
web site "White Papers" section (http://www.horde.org/papers/) for the
Scalable Webmail HOWTO.  The IMAP server and mail storage format you're
using will make a big difference, I know.
