On that note, I see that there is a Horde 1.3.4 on the FTP site, and Webmail
2.3.6. Do these two work together?

php's db schema dated 3 July 2001.
now killed Postgres, configured to use MySQL. The same problems...

You may have misunderstood what I meant about the schema... does your 
horde_prefs table have a scope field, etc., and otherwise match what's in 
horde/lib/Prefs/sql.php?
