Login failure on 2.2.x

Hi there,

    I have been using 2.2.x branch for more than a year now with no bigger
problems.
    I recently recompiled the latest Apache/PHP/MySQL for testing it with a
forthcoming 2.3 release. However, the strangest thing happened: my beloved
2.2.x refuses to log users on with this new php compile. It just times out
and says "wrong username/password" after a couple of seconds.
/var/log/messages states this:
imapd[7795]: Login failure user=P=ÿ¿^TØ%^HÍ^X^H  host=localhost [127.0.0.1]
imapd[7806]: Login failure user=P=ÿ¿ô ^Y^Hb^Y^H  host=localhost [127.0.0.1]
and so on.
I am almost sure that gettext is causing problems - when I skip it compiling
php, everyting's alright and when it's in - I cannot log on to IMP.

Has anyone had this problem?
