weird problem in IMP 2.2.6 (fwd)

Hello!

I have been using IMP at my personal website for a couple of years now.

It has been wonderful.

Anyway, I have upgraded to imp 2.2.6 and I am getting problems with the
automatic "new mail" check -

When I press "INBOX", all is well, and new mail is checked.  When it does so
automagically, there is always a failure, though the logged user id seems to
change.

I am running Red Hat 7.2.

here are some lines from the maillog:

Sep  8 22:42:16 testing imapd[10068]: AUTHENTICATE LOGIN failure host=localhost.
localdomain [127.0.0.1]
Sep  8 22:42:22 testing last message repeated 2 times
Sep  8 22:42:22 testing imapd[10068]: Logout user=??? host=localhost.localdomain
 [127.0.0.1]

from messages, the following is showing up:
Sep  8 22:38:54 testing imapd[10037]: Login failure user=XH6^H host=localhost.lo
caldomain [127.0.0.1]
Sep  8 22:42:13 testing imapd[10068]: Login failure user=\210}^V^H host=localhos
t.localdomain [127.0.0.1]
