Uhm?  Like the original reported wrote, I sent myself a message with an
empty body (touch /tmp/blank ; cat /tmp/blank | mail -s blank
askwar@localhost).

When I view this message in Pine, it is marked read.  Ie. I select it
and press <Enter>.

When I view such a message in IMP, it is not marked read.

Or what do you mean?
