What platform are you on?  (Linux--which one?  Solaris?  FreeBSD?)  What
version of MySQL is installed?  What version of PHP are you trying to
compile?

Those two things don't make sense together.  If you're compiling PHP with
MySQL support statically built in, then you don't need a mysql.so (or to
put that line in php.ini).  That's how I do it on Solaris, for example.  
If you want a mysql.so, then you're not compiling statically.  That's how
the Red Hat Linux RPMs do it, for example.
