Hello Jan,

I installed latest PEAR from the FreeBSD ports. The install directory is
/usr/local/lib/php and I have edited php.ini (BTW FreeBSD stores its php.ini
in /usr/local/etc but I also put one in /usr/local/bin/php.ini) where I 
have now put 

include_path	=	"/usr/local/lib/php"

I managed to go a step ahead. Thanking you in advance for all help. Now the
problem has shifted goalposts ;-)
