Some more things you please can try to find out: Does quoting _always_ work 
even if there are no whitespaces? What happens if you quote a password that 
contains a quote itself? Does the login dialog understand escaped quotes?

Try if you can find out how PHP talks to the server. Does it quote the 
passwords?
